I have two little projects to share with you today. First is a small bag I’ve made as a gift; it’s another Zip It Up bag from ByAnnie. I really like this bag, as it opens up completely flat and then zips completely and compactly closed. I added an adorable little zipper pull shaped like a sewing machine to this one. 🙂
I had a good time doing a “swooping” spray of feathers to quilt the layers together, which you can see better here on the bottom and inside of the bag.
The other thing I have to show you is the result of a fantastic class I took during my recent trip to the Houston Quilt Festival. The instructor was Peter Hayward, who was absolutely wonderful. There was no sewing involved at all. We made strips of different colors of fabrics, including some ombré fabrics and a background. and then the strips were woven together in a prescribed order. You will notice that I’m awful at mitering 60° corners. Oh well. The whole piece measures about 11.5″ x 13.5″.

Wow Sandy, your bags are so nice. That’s a great pattern! The wide opening is a bonus!
Fabric weaving looks intimating. Yours is beautiful.
Thanks, Deena! I love that bag design — I can put “stuff” into it for travel and then open it flat to toss machine feet, clips, etc., inside while working.
Love the bag style and your feathers. By Annie bags are genius.
I’m not sure I would have attempted the fabric weaving as I suck at hand work. Yours is impressive, congratulations on a great job.
Thanks, Candice! The weaving wasn’t too difficult, except for keeping track of whether to go over or under a particular strip. 😉
I love that bag so much, I even went to the By Annie site to look at it. I think they would make great gifts! Can I ask how long they take to construct? Thank you!
Thanks, Jill! Of course, the bag takes a different amount of time for different people, but you should be able to make it in just a few hours. 🙂 I’d strongly recommend watching the included video for tips on the more unusual aspects of this construction; it made it much easier for me the first time I made it a few months ago. Have fun!
