It’s been a while, and I promise I’m still working on my current quilt. However, something else “popped up” that had to be done. Thirteen years ago, we’d had granite countertops installed in our kitchen. Unfortunately, the people who installed it did a terrible job, and the piece that went along the front of the sink was literally falling off; there were other glitches, too. It was time to do something about it. We found someone to install new countertops; someone to install a new backsplash; a plumber to hook up the sink, disposer, dishwasher, and reverse osmosis system; and someone to repair the drywall that was damaged in pulling off the old backsplash.
We got really lucky! The only delay we encountered was waiting for a new sink to arrive so that we could begin. After that, it went like clockwork. 🙂 On Thursday, the counter people demolished the granite, leaving us with a non-functional kitchen, of course. They also installed new plywood as the base for the new counters.
Our dog was very puzzled about seeing the stove in the middle of the floor!
Luckily, we’d made sure we had paper plates, and we did do a few take-out meals when using a stove wasn’t possible.
On Friday, our new counters arrived on a truck, ready to be cut to size! They’re made of something called Calacatta Laza, which is actually quartz. “They” tell me that quartz is even stronger than granite, and it doesn’t require sealing or any specialized care. Besides that, I think it’s gorgeous! Since we already had grey floors, the white and grey counters fit right in.
The counters were completed that same day, but we had some serious holes in the drywall where the previous backsplash had been. Oops. However, Saturday the plumber came and hooked us back up so we at least had water again! 🙂
Sunday, surprisingly, the drywall man came. He only has one day a week when he’s not working for someone, so Sunday worked perfectly for us. He did a lovely job, too.
Monday the tile backsplash — tile we’d previously picked out and purchased — went in, and Tuesday it was grouted. Five days from beginning to end of the actual work! I love it! It’s clean and bright and makes our smaller home look airy and spacious. Have I mentioned how much I like it?

Beautiful work. One of my passions is watching renovation programs. It is the only thing I will watch on TV. You did a great job. Our kitchen reno took 8 months. We gutted it to the studs. Completely refigured walls and ceilings. I love it but not ever interested in doing it again. d
Oof! Eight months! I don’t blame you for not wanting to repeat the adventure. 😉 Five days was enough for me, though I’ll admit I could really use more storage space ….
So beautiful — almost exactly what we put in during our recent kitchen renovation!!!
Thanks, Lynne! I’m guessing you love yours as much as I do mine! 🙂
I have the same quartz in our remodeled kitchen. You DO have to be careful about putting very hot dishes directly on it, as there is resin in the composition of the material, and it will discolour if heated to a very high temp. I always use a trivet to protect it. Be sure to ask about cleaning it, and what products they recommend from the manufacturer. Jill in Calgary/Phoenix
Thanks, Jill! We were definitely warned about hot dishes, and we asked about cleaning, too, so it’s all good. I do appreciate your heads-up, and I admire your taste in countertops! 😉
Nice! But what has this to do with quilting?..
Not much, I’ll admit, Lillian. However, the title of my blog is “Quilting and more …” — I think this falls into the “and more” part. 😉
Wow on how great your kitchen looks and the swift install. Often things don’t fall into place easily but yippee when it does. That kitchen looks like it is really pleasant to work in. Happy cooking in between sewing.
Thanks, Taria! We were really surprised when each step of the project went so well, and both of us are delighted with the result. 🙂
nice result…. we used the same backsplash tiles in our kitchen also…. before we sold it…
Thanks, Jenny! 🙂
Sandy, it looks beautiful! We had quartz put in our last kitchen and it is really wonderful – so easy to take care of. Hope you love it.
Thanks, Marcella! So far, I do love it. 🙂 It’s great to hear testimonials from people who’ve had it and still like it. Hope you’re doing well. 🙂
