Experiment

Small (17" square) wholecloth quilt on grey/white Grunge fabric with taupe binding. The quilting is in white thread and is a geometric design repeated four times and surrounded by piano-key quilting in the border.Several days ago I saw an email that piqued my interest. Telene Jeffrey, from South Africa, designs absolutely gorgeous wholecloth quilts. I love wholecloth quilts, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve made one. Since she has so many exquisite designs, I decided to start out small by doing her free design before deciding whether or not to do a larger one — which may happen in the future. I probably wouldn’t use a Grunge fabric again for this, though, as it makes the design difficult to see.

I traced the design by using my lightbox, though you could also use a bright window. I finally decided not to do the fill work between motifs, as I’m really not very good at teeny-tiny stippling — or stippling at all, for that matter.

Close-up of a quarter-section of the quilting. There is a flower in the corner and a suggestion of a Celtic-like design in the center. The laser pointer built into my Bernina 790Pro was invaluable as I worked on this free-motion quilting and also on the straight lines, done with ruler work, in the border. Be sure to click on the photos to expand them, as the motifs are a bit difficult to see in a small version.

The finished table topper, 17″ square, is a gift for our wonderful neighbors.
