One of the things I’m working on while pondering which motifs to use in quilting my latest quilt has been the embroidered nativity set below (click on the photo to enlarge it, as always). I will be getting some tiny lights for it so that it becomes a three-part light box, but in the meantime I’ve just placed a lamp behind to give an idea of the effect.
The pieces are a combination of free-standing lace and free-standing appliqué, all done in the hoop on my Bernina. The design comes from OESD and is very straightforward. The appliqué is quite simple, consisting only of small rectangles of tulle as the background to each of the scenes. My goodness, though, does it take a lot of thread! LOL! My Bernina uses ginormous bobbins, and I think I’ve gone through at least nine in making this. The next photo shows the stitching in progress for two of the lace side pieces, perhaps giving you an idea of how heavy the thread layers must be to get the desired effect. All of the pieces must then be put together by means of precisely-placed embroidered balls and either holes or loops — all so tiny that a special tool is essential to join the parts together.

This has always been a favorite of mine. d
I ran across this last Christmas season, but I didn’t have time to make it at that point. Now it will be ready for next time! 🙂
So beautiful, you are very patient. You won’t be late for Christmas this year!
Thanks, Katie!
Sandy, you can get fine point haemostats that work fine for pulling the little “balls” through the holes. The are sort of like scissors, but used in medical situations for holding things. Hope you understand that!! lol
Thanks, Dorothy. I have the alligator hemostats that work very well! 🙂 It still pretty fiddly, though. 😉
Oh that’s stunning, how clever!
Thanks, Ally! 🙂
