Remembering a couple of trips

Cruising quilt-0001Several years ago my husband and I took our first cruise, going to several islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Just over a year ago, I took another cruise to the same area, this time a quilting cruise with several friends. During that cruise I bought three small pieces of fabric that represented the three islands we visited, and I also bought a cute quilt hanger in the shape of a cruise ship. Naturally, all of that sat in my “I’ll do something with this someday” bin, but that’s the bin I’ve been attacking recently.

Cruising quilt-0002I’d originally wanted a batik to use for the borders for these blocks, but I couldn’t find one that was exactly what I’d wanted. However, I did find a gradated Moda that went from a peachy shade to deep pink, picking up the colors of the sky in two of the blocks. Yay! I made the blocks into a tall, narrow quilt to hang on the side of the bookcase in my sewing room; that bookcase is beige metal, and it needed a bit of jazzing up.

Cruising quilt-0003The quilting in the blocks themselves is minimal, and I did free-motion flowers (hibiscus, if you use your imagination) in all of the little borders. The whole thing only measures about 23.5″ x 8.25″, but I think it’s just what that bookcase needed, and it reminds me of two very enjoyable cruises. 🙂
