In my last post, I showed you my new Bernina 780 — new to me, that is, though it was a demo model and so had been used a little. I’ve spent the weekend “playing” with this amazing machine, though I’ve yet to try the embroidery module and its functions. I’ve been exploring the settings (Bernina calls these newer machines “sewing computers” for good reason!), as well as the stitch quality and tension, etc.
While I don’t yet have the acrylic insert that will allow me to set the machine down flush into my cabinet, I’ve been able to adjust everything so that the slide-on table gives me more surface area than the free-arm would have done alone. Still, it’s not perfectly flat (the extension table is curved), so I’m anxious for that insert to arrive.
In the meantime, I’ve decided to go ahead and get back to quilting the Drunkard’s Path that I’d had to put on hold during the busy holiday season. Having the extra inches under the arm of the machine is bliss! Since the part of the quilt that I’m working on now is more or less in the center, it really makes a huge difference. And — like my 630 before this — the 780 purrs like a kitten as I go along. The photo shows the feathers I’m putting into some larger open spaces; they tie into the feathers in the circular sections of the blocks. I’m using a matching Aurifil 50 wt. cotton thread on this batik; Aurifil is one of my favorites.

I’ve had my 710 for a year and a half, and I love it too! I didn’t want the embroidery capability, and DH was tired of transporting 2 machines back and forth each year. I kept my Pfaff and Juki as backup, but haven’t used them since my new machine arrived. I’ll take them to my guild’s community quilts workshops – lighter to transport. Have fun!
Good to hear that you still love your 710, Susan! I have loved my 630 from day one, but it’s getting some stiff competition from this 780 now. 🙂 Of course I’m keeping my 630 to transport, just as you’ve kept your other machines and for the same reasons. 😉
