Feathered LeMoyne Star

This quilt is the result of a drafting/piecing lesson in a series of online classes offered by Philippa Naylor. Since I love both feathered stars and LeMoyne stars, I jumped right in to make it. I fussy cut the Paula Nadelstern print and filled in the other pieces with solids. Rulerwork straight lines and free-motion feathered quilting motifs, as well as corded piping completed it.

The finished quill measures about 39″ square, and I finished it in October, 2021.

This quilt has now traveled to the Road to California show (January, 2023) and also won an Honorable Mention ribbon at our local Desert Quilters of Nevada show in March.

Now this same quilt has returned from hanging in the Paducah AQS show!

Starry Starry Night

Carol Doak sponsored a BOM for her online group, beginning in September, 2007, and ending the following August. I made all of the blocks at 3″ square and then couldn’t decide how to set them together. As I was trying to solve the problem, the 4000th member joined the group, and Carol designed another block to celebrate. That block became the center of the little quilt with the BOM blocks.

All of the blocks are in shades of purple and lavender with yellow as an accent and black as the background. The quilt measures 15 1/4″ square and is machine pieced and machine quilted. I finished it in August, 2008.

Starlight Baby Quilt

Carol Doak published a mystery quilt for her online group in 2007; I made the top and set it aside. Then a baby was born to one of our nephews and his wife, so I decided to quilt this piece for their new little girl. The quilt measures about 30.5″ square and was finished in March, 2009.

It’s colorful enough that I think it will keep a baby’s interest — especially in the borders. I machine quilted sprays of feathers all over in pale pink, using a darker pink in the borders.

Spiked Desert Star

I took a class from Deb Karasik at Quilt Camp in 2008, and we made her paper-pieced pattern called Arizona Sunrise. I didn’t square off my corners, choosing to leave the quilt octagonal instead; for that I had to redesign the borders in EQ6.

Another machine quilting class from Sharon Schamber inspired the quilting on this piece, which measures about 45″ x 45″. I finished it in November, 2008, after several delays.

Here is a detail of the quilting in the large navy squares:

Rolling Star Quilt

In January, 2000, I took a class from Jodi Barrows, using her Square in a Square techniques to make this star quilt. It was machine pieced and hand quilted. I know some people think this technique might be difficult because of the many bias edges, but I found it quick and easy — if you’ve starched the fabric first to prevent the otherwise inevitable stretching! It measures 35 1/2″ x 46 1/2″.

Radiant Feathered Star

I took a class from Marsha McCloskey in April, 2005, when she came here as part of our local quilt show. I’d already made another small Feathered Star, but I really love this pattern (it’s based on the Lemoyne Star, after all!), so I took the class. We worked on the Radiant Feathered Star in class, learning how to draft our own patterns, too. After I finished my block at home, I decided to make three more, two in reversed colors; but the fabric is too old and isn’t available, so now I have another small wall hanging! 😉 This one was machine pieced and machine quilted and measures 21″ square.

There are red machine-quilted feathered hearts in each of the two-color squares, and there are cream feathered sprays in the border. The star points are stitched in the ditch, and there is a LeMoyne Star quilted in the center. I inserted piping between the border and the binding and finished the little quilt in May, 2005. Here’s a photo of the back, where you can see the quilting more easily.

Patriotic Banner

Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, it was impossible to find a flag to hang at our home. However, I did find a pattern for this banner on a web site which unfortunately no longer exists.. The banner measures 14″ x 36″ and was machine pieced and machine quilted on my little Featherweight. The Featherweight used to belong to my mother-in-law, but she generously gave it to me, and I’ve since gifted it to my granddaughter to keep it in the family.

Paper-Pieced Table Runner

My mother-in-law loved blue and yellow almost as much as I do! 🙂 She needed a runner to use on her coffee table to accent a vase, so I made this one for her.

The two end blocks are from a free pattern on Carol Doak’s web site, and the center block is from her book Mariner’s Compass Stars. The runner measures 17″ x 48″ and was completely machine pieced and machine quilted. I finished it in September, 2007, and gave it to my mother-in-law for Christmas.

My First Feathered Star

This was the result of a terrific class I took from Sharyn Craig at Quilt Camp in the Pines in 1999. I needed a small (20 1/2″ square) wallhanging for my kitchen, and this fit the bill. It was machine pieced and machine quilted.

Morning Stars

I fell in love with a sketch in a magazine and drafted this quilt from that. I finished it in 1990, machine piecing and hand quilting it. I’d never done eight-pointed stars before, so the centers were a bit “hilly” until they were quilted. But the quilt won Best of Show at our county fair! This one measures 43 1/2″ x 35″.
