I saw a quilt online recently and thought it looked like a fun one to make, so I bought the downloadable design. Oops. After downloading it and reading the instructions, I discovered that those instructions basically said to follow the directions on the two specialty rulers required for the design — and those rulers added up to over $50! Since I doubt that I’d ever use the rulers again, I decided to play with EQ8 and see if I could figure out a way to make the quilt without the rulers. I made two sample blocks (wrong colors, but just samples, so no worries) to check measurements. Success!
I’ve spent the past few days cutting out the colored bits and pieces I’ll need. This is what approximately 400 pieces (no exaggeration!) looks like, once placed in baggies to keep the sizes straight. It would have been fun to heap them all up in a loose pile, but I’d never be sure of the sizes again. LOL!
Now I’ll need to cut at least that many pieces again from the background fabric, which I bought yesterday, since I didn’t have enough of anything to use. The colored fabrics, though, were all from hoarded batiks in my stash!

That is crazy making! But you have made the negative experience into a challenge – it will be so fun to see your finished quilt!
Thanks, Linda! If the men in the white coats don’t haul me away, I’ll have an interesting quilt to show for it. 😉
Only a quilter cuts up good fabric to put it back together again! That is too many pieces for me. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Susan B,
LOL! I don’t normally need this many pieces, but I do like the design, so it’s worth it. 🙂
Hidden “specialty ruler required” can be so annoying! You did a fab job of making up your instructions for you. Look forward to seeing more as this project grows.
Thanks, Kathleen! This one could take some time. 😉
