I’d planned to make a cover for my machine, but I didn’t get around to it for some time. One of the reasons was that I usually have the big spool holder attached to my Bernina, and I hated the idea of having to remove it each time I wanted to use the cover. Hmmm. After much thinking and experimenting with newspaper pattern pieces, I finally came up with something! I made the back panel a bit narrower than the front and filled in the empty space with two flaps; one goes below the spool holder to keep the cover in place, and the other is above that for use when the holder has been removed. The flaps fasten with hook and loop tape, so it’s all very easy.

To construct the bag, I used the measurements of the newsprint pieces to cut my various fabrics. I constructed the aqua lining separately from the outer bag, which I quilted with straight lines, and put the two together when they were made, binding the bottom to finish. I added aqua piping along the top as an accent, and embroidered the logo to brighten things up. The machine is only covered to where it meets the plexiglass table, since it’s relatively rarely that I have it all the way up. I think the cover will be really useful, given our dusty climate here!

I’m editing this post, given that I’ve had several requests for more detailed photos of how I made the opening flap for the spool holder. Unfortunately, I didn’t save my pattern or write down the directions for how I made this — something I now regret. But perhaps these photos will help someone to make their own cover with whatever opening might be necessary for any particular machine. As usual, clicking on the photos will enlarge them.

This first photo shows the back of the cover with both flaps closed.
