I have a very nice sewing cabinet, made by Tracey’s Tables. It has left-side and back extensions that go up when I want to work on a large, flat surface, and there’s also a “corner” extension that flips back to fill in between the left side and the back — it’s wonderful for supporting a quilt. Still, my sewing room is small, so I can’t leave those extensions up all the time. When I’m embroidering, I move my Bernina 780 away from the movable platform it’s on for normal work and onto the part of the cabinet right over the drawers. Then I have to put up the left extension for the embroidery module to sit on, which necessitates opening that corner extension in order to avoid a change in height between the module and the machine. Clear as mud? This has worked well for me for the past few years — no problems at all until a couple of days ago.

I’d swung the corner extension up and out of the way so I could get to the ironing board to fuse some stabilizer to fabric. This has also always worked — until now. Somehow, I must have jostled the cabinet, and the corner extension slammed into the “down” position — hard. That dislodged the hinges quite a bit and left the extension angled slightly down. Yikes!

But my husband came to my rescue, thank goodness. He fixed the hinges and remounted them, but then he went further and made me a removable support for the extension so that there wouldn’t be such a strain on those hinges. It’s not beautiful, but it really does the job! It’s all made from PVC piping and connectors and can easily be stored in a closet when I don’t need it. Yay!
